What is ear surgery-Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is the medical term for a reconstructive procedure done on a patient’s ears to amend injuries or deformities.

Ear surgery or Otoplastyis divided into two main procedures, these include:

  • Reconstructive otoplasty -This type of ear surgery is aimed at restoring or reconstructing the ear which was seriously affected by burns or injuries.
  • Aesthetic otoplasty- This type of ear surgery looks to correct deformities on the ears that came as a result of congenital defects. The goal is to aesthetically alter the appearance of the ears to look normal.

Here, the surgeon uses various techniques to change the shape, size, and location of the ears for a normal looking appearance. In isolated cases, the surgeon may see it fit to remove cartilage from a different part of the patient’s body such as the ribs to use during the ear surgery to help achieve a certain shape or size. In addition, tissue may be collected from the area above the patient’s buttocks to perform a skin grafting procedure on the patient’s ears.

Ear surgery procedure and recovery time

Depending on whether the patient is an adult or a child, the ear surgery is done under local or general anesthesia. The surgeon first makes an incision behind each ear. Once the cartilage is visible, the surgeon goes ahead to remove excess skin or cartilage to give the ear a desirable shape and move it to the right location. The operation ends with the surgeon sealing the incisions with dissolvable sutures.

The surgery is expected to last for 1 hour to 2 hours. It usually takes 3 days to a week for the soreness, swelling and numb feeling to fade away. Thereafter the patient is advised to continue eating healthy and taking his or her prescribed medication which encourages faster healing.

The results are visible almost immediately after the surgery but become increasingly noticeable with time.
